The UPSC Civil Services Mains examination consists of nine papers, of which seven are merit-based. The four GS papers (each 250 marks) together contribute 1,000 marks. Combined with Essay (250 marks) and Optional (500 marks), GS strategy is fundamental to your total score.

THE NATURE OF MAINS — WHAT UPSC REWARDS:
Mains tests four capabilities simultaneously: breadth of knowledge, analytical depth, communication clarity, and the ability to connect concepts across domains. A candidate who writes "India has a parliamentary system" and stops scores poorly. The high-scoring answer continues with specific accountability mechanisms, historical context, and comparative analysis.

GS PAPER 1 — HISTORY, GEOGRAPHY, SOCIETY:
History answers follow: Context → Event/Movement → Causes (multi-dimensional) → Course → Consequences. Geography answers are strongest with rough sketch maps, data, and regional examples. Society answers reward use of sociological thinkers (Srinivas, Dumont) and data (FLFPR, sex ratio, government schemes).

GS PAPER 2 — POLITY, GOVERNANCE, INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS:
Polity answers must cite specific articles, constitutional provisions, landmark cases, and committee recommendations. Governance answers reference Second ARC reports, specific e-governance initiatives with outcomes. IR answers need a frameworks approach: realism, liberalism, constructivism as lenses — not just bilateral event chronology.

GS PAPER 3 — ECONOMY, TECHNOLOGY, ENVIRONMENT, SECURITY:
Economy answers integrate data and policy simultaneously: quantify the problem → explain mechanisms → evaluate policy responses → suggest path forward. Technology answers should be current and specific (IndiaAI Mission, SUVAS translation system). Environment answers must combine ecological science with policy knowledge.

GS PAPER 4 — ETHICS, INTEGRITY, APTITUDE:
Theory questions: define terms precisely, cite relevant thinkers, ground abstract concepts in administrative examples. Case studies: identify all stakeholders, list competing values, evaluate three courses of action (legally safest, ethically boldest, pragmatic middle path), justify recommended course.

ONE UNIVERSAL TIP: Every Mains answer should have a forward-looking conclusion. Never end abruptly — recommend, suggest, propose.
